Projects

2023 - Present

We had an exciting array of winter projects this year including this magnificent personal mega-yacht. This 196 foot Italian beauty needed some and care on one of its two 260 KVA generators and its horn/warning control panel. We were fortunate to be able to make an on the spot repair to the generator to prevent a complete tear-down/repair to one of its main power-lines.

The horn warning system controller was a "simple" panel replacement that ended up requiring us to break out a cutting tool to make a larger cut in the bridge - all under the watchful eye of the Captain.

Ultimately, we were tasked with few more "while your here" tasks which we were able to take care of resulting in another happy client.

Two V-12 Twin Turbo Caterpillar Diesel engines power this yacht at a comfortable 14 knots. The large "dishwasher tub" like "can" in front if me is the air filter!

We were contacted by the ship’s captain to work on this custom 88’ historical reproduction of The Dove. The “Maryland Dove” ship design is a reproduction based on the original Dove, a 17th century trading ship that sailed to the Maryland colony with Ark in 1634. It was completed in 2022 and is Historic St. Mary’s City’s floating ambassador and one of its most popular exhibits.

During their maiden voyage from St. Mary’s City to Annapolis the foundation discovered they were unable to track the vessel’s progress via AIS so they contacted us to troubleshoot and rectify the system. After some analysis we confirmed the powered antenna switch was wired incorrectly and the AIS’ GPS antenna was installed in an area where it could not receive GPS signals. Once we corrected the wiring and re-located the GPS antenna the system worked perfectly and the Maryland Dove was back online giving tours.

You have to love Annapolis, you never know what beautiful yacht you’ll get to see next! To Learn More about the Maryland Dove check out their website at The Maryland Dove

We were contacted to work on this 100' 1929 Alden Schooner “Summer Wind” to fix the starboard engine. After a little troubleshooting we were able to rebuild the engine's failed fuel filter housing. Once put back together the vessel was able to resume is travels. It was an honor to be entrusted with and work on this nearly 100 year old beautiful yacht! This is a good example of the work we've done for our client's. This is a before and after picture of a client's 1985 custom Dillon 47' sailboat. After years of cruising and upgrading it was time to roll-up our sleeves and clean-up and redo a lot of the wiring. The following pictures are Before and After the work was done.

2021

Our newest client called us to repair one of the two failed 70kw generators on their 122' San Lorenzo which prevented the vessel from leaving shore-power. We troubleshot the issue to a bad Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR). After partial disassembly of the genset back-end the SCR was replaced and the genset was reassembled. This brought the genset back online, restoring non-shore power and enabling the client to take the vessel out when desired.

We had the opportunity to install a high-end Lithium Ion battery system along with a commensurate battery management system for our client's 36' Sabre.

The requirement was to install a battery system capable of running the air conditioner for one hour after a day of sailing. With help from PKYS, we installed two 200Ah Lithium Ion batteries along with Victron's Multiplus 3000 inverter charger along with numerous other components to provide in-depth control/monitoring yet automated power management. As a plus, this system is networked into a 4g hotspot allowing us the ability to remotely access, inspect and maintain the system.

In the end, the owner is able to run the air conditioner for nearly three hours before the system shuts off the air conditioner to preserve the batteries with enough power to continue operating the boat’s critical DC systems.

- We were hired to upgrade the electronics on a 52' 2003 Seahorse Trawler. The job was to remove the old plotters from the Pilot House and Fly-Bridge, install Garmin GPS plotters and a Garmin AIS Transceiver and repair lack of transmit and receive on all three VHF radios.

The VHF problems were traced to failing antennas, a VHF switch in the wrong location, inadequate coax connectors, a coax coupler and a failed radio.

Both antennas, the radio and all non-factory coax connectors were replaced, the switch was relocated and the coupler was no longer needed and removed. The radios were tested and all signals were strong with extremely low loss and AIS vessels tracked up to 18 miles away.

The NMEA 2000 network was expanded to accommodate the new Garmin plotters, AIS and VHF radio, new instrument panels were fabricated and all were installed to make both helm stations like new.

- The owner of this Yanmar 3GM30 contacted us to go over his engine for a new to him boat. The engine had significant amount corrosion preventing basic servicing.

The fuel hard-lines were seized to the injectors, the injectors were seized in the head, the heat exchange end-cap bolts were cut-off and pulled/replaced. The fuel supply lines and an engine mount were replaced and numerous parts were removed and cleaned of corrosion.

Once components were restored or replaced and the engine was re-assembled, it was re-painted with factory paint and run tested. The owner now has a good as new engine to power his boat.

Past Projects

2019

- Tiara 3700 Open: Client called to have the after-coolers removed and cleaned in order to complete a sale. After-coolers were removed, cleaned and re-installed. During the initial engine test run extreme high raw water pressure was noted on the port engine which was found to be the result of a clogged oil cooler. Once corrected a high-pressure oil line was found to be leaking so a line was re-manufactured and the failing line was replaced. The new buyer took possession of the boat and drove it from Annapolis to New Hampshire without any issues.

- Re-built client’s 5.0L Volvo Penta Engine. Engine initially would not start. Found the starter had been ripped off its starter mount. Found engine had hydro-locked. Rebuilt the engine with a new 5.7L Volvo Penta long-block. Replaced the starter gear ring, Re-furbished the injectors, re-programmed the ECM, replaced the map sensor, manifolds and risers. Boat is back on the water with a little extra horsepower and plenty of new life

- Rebuilt Universal Diesel M12: Removed engine, replaced rings and valves and all bearing, rebuilt head and injector pump - Re-installed engine and it now runs like new - Client has followed up he is enjoying his boat again after several years on the hard.

- Rebuilt Universal Diesel M10: Client indicated engine has been getting more difficult to start for several years until it wouldn’t start at all - replaced rings, valves, and all bearing, rebuilt head and injector pump and engine is as strong as ever.

- Rebuilt Yanmar 3GM30: Client stated engine was making a loud banging noise. Once engine was opened it was clear the #2 connecting rod bearing had failed ruining the rod and crankshaft. Crankshaft, connecting rod, valves, rings and all bearing were replaced as well as a number of other components due to corrosion and engine looks and runs like new.

- Rebuilt Peninsulor 400 aka. “The Beast” for an Albin 28: Inspection and testing of this engine revealed it needed to be replaced/rebuilt. Upon further work it was discovered that numerous push-rods were bent, injector tips broken and Turbo was seizing. This project required the Turbo, starter and all injectors to be rebuilt coupled with massive cleaning/de-greasing due to the 1" thick lays of sludge in the marine oil pan. Though some follow-on work is needed to restore the engine's glo-plug timing circuit and injector pump work, this engine is rebuild is complete and the client is off and running!

- Annapolis City Fire Boat: The Annapolis City Fire Department awarded us the job to pull all the wiring from its mast and to remove the mast and all electronics in prep to ship their Fire Boat out for a complete re-furb

- Onan 12KW Genset: Another client called in with problem of “Cannot get genset to shut down without blocking off the air intake”. After an inspection and some dis-assembly quickly revealed the injector pump had seized. The pump was rebuilt, re-installed and the genset now operates, and shuts down properly.

- Westerbeke 8KW Genset Part I: Client called in with problem of engine shuts down approximately 30 seconds after starting. An inspection of the electrical system showed the Coolant Temperature sensor was shorted out. Sensor was replaced and unit was fully operational again.

- Westerbeke 8KW Genset Part II: Client called in with genset problem of not holding a load of its AirCon units or its electric stove. Upon inspection of the unit, it was noted the unit was set to the wrong frequency but also that it was VERY slow to start. Owner stated the genset “had always been like that”. The injector pump was pulled and rebuilt, now the genset starts with ease and power all AirCon unit including the stove.

- Westerbeke 8KW Genset Part III: Client called in with problem of genset not producing any power. Inspection revealed the mixing elbow had corroded to the point that raw water was spraying onto the generator windings. The elbow was replaced as well as the back-end generator and the unit is now back in operation.
